Kanysh Satbayev

Geologist, Academician, Founder and 1st President of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences

1899 – 1964

Renowned geologist who discovered the Zhezkazgan copper deposits and founded Kazakh national science.

Kanysh Satbayev was a Soviet and Kazakh geologist, academician, founder of the metallic planetology school in Kazakhstan, and the founding President of the Kazakh SSR Academy of Sciences.

1. Discovery of Zhezkazgan

Satbayev's most defining achievement was his geological study of the Zhezkazgan region. Defying early skeptical assessments by Western geologists, Satbayev scientifically proved that Zhezkazgan was one of the largest copper reserves in the world, leading to the establishment of a major industrial complex.

2. Founding the Academy of Sciences

In 1946, Satbayev established the Kazakh SSR Academy of Sciences and served as its very first president. Under his leadership, foundational institutes covering geology, metallurgy, chemistry, and mining engineering were built from the ground up.

3. Metallogenic Predictions & Legacy

Satbayev developed groundbreaking scientific mapping methodologies for predicting mineral and ore deposits across Central Kazakhstan. Today, his legacy lives on through Kazakh National Technical University (Satbayev University), city names, streets, and even a mineral named in his honor (Satpaevite).
