As generative AI redefines global technology, Kazakhstan has taken a decisive step toward tech sovereignty with the launch of ISSAI KazLLM (Kazakh Large Language Model).
Developed by the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI) at Nazarbayev University in strategic partnership with Astana Hub, QazCode (Beeline Kazakhstan), and the NU Foundation, KazLLM provides a culturally aligned, locally hosted foundation model for Central Asia.

- High-Quality Dataset: Trained on over 150+ billion tokens, with 95% of data hand-curated by ISSAI researchers from Kazakh cultural heritage texts, legal records, news archives, and open libraries.
- Dual Parameter Sizes: Available in 8B (optimized with 4-bit quantization for lightweight deployment on local workstations) and 70B (built for heavy enterprise and public administration workloads).
- Supercomputing Power: Trained locally on high-performance NVIDIA DGX H100 hardware nodes.
Sovereignty & Cultural Preservation
Unlike global models that rely on English-to-Kazakh translation layers, KazLLM processes Kazakh syntax, local cultural idioms, and legal contexts natively. The model weights and evaluation suites have been released under an open-source license on Hugging Face for non-commercial research and enterprise adoption.
