Audaryspak (Equestrian Wrestling)

Audaryspak is a traditional Kazakh equestrian sport where two riders compete to pull each other off their horses. Success requires immense physical strength, exceptional balance, and perfect mastery of horse control.

Origins & Cultural Significance

Audaryspak date back to the nomadic era, originally serving as a crucial method for warriors to train their combat skills and physical endurance on horseback. Ancient warriors needed to master not only weapons but also the ability to overpower an opponent barehanded while mounted. Today, it is an essential part of Kazakh national festivals and international competitions, symbolizing strength, courage, and superb horsemanship.

Key Rules & Features

  • Exclusively on Horseback: The entire contest takes place with both riders mounted, their feet secured in the stirrups.
  • Objective: The goal is to pull, push, or hoist the opponent out of their saddle, causing them to fall to the ground or onto the horse's back.
  • Specialized Training: Competitors (Batyrs) undergo rigorous strength training, focusing on core and arm power. The horses themselves must also be strong, calm, and highly responsive to commands.
  • Techniques: Legal grips involve holding the opponent's arms, waist, or the front of the saddle (saddle horn). Athletes utilize bursts of power and lever action.

Now, Audaryspak championships are organized at various levels across Kazakhstan, inspiring a new generation of athletes and keeping this ancient tradition alive.
