Biography & Global Legend
Kajimukan Munaitpasov was born in 1871 in the village of Karaotkel, Akmola Region. Possessing unmatched natural strength from a young age, he quickly became local legend by lifting carriages and wrestling bulls. Seeking professional development, he moved to Saint Petersburg to train at a premier wrestling academy, mastering Greco-Roman (French) wrestling techniques. Over his career, he performed in 54 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas under ring names such as 'Yamagata Mukhanura', 'Black Ivan', and 'Lord of the Steppe'.
Athletic Accomplishments & Records
- First Kazakh World Champion: In 1909, he claimed the gold medal at the World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship in Gothenburg, becoming the first Kazakh athlete in history to secure a world title.
- Global Tournament Victories: Championed major international tournaments in Paris, Warsaw, Harbin, Istanbul, and Buenos Aires. He competed alongside and forged lifelong friendships with world wrestling icons like Ivan Poddubny and Alex Aberg.
- Medals & Decorations: Awarded more than 48 international gold medals and prestigious honors, including the Order of Charles V and the Persian Order of the Lion and the Sun.
Circus Feats of Strength
Beyond competitive wrestling, Kajimukan was a renowned strongman in circus arenas worldwide. He mesmerized audiences with feats such as having large boulders sledgehammered on his chest, bending steel rails with his hands, breaking heavy iron chains wrapped around his neck, and letting fully loaded horse carriages drive over his body.
Patriotic Legacy During WWII
When World War II erupted, the legendary athlete was over 70 years old. Undeterred by age, he organized a nationwide fundraising tour, performing acrobatic strongman acts across Kazakh towns to raise 100,000 rubles. He donated the entire sum to the Defense Fund with a request to construct a combat aircraft. The resulting PO-2 fighter plane was officially christened 'Kajimukan' and flown into front-line battles by pilot Kazhitay Shalabayev.
