Mukhtar Auezov

Great writer, author of the epic novel 'The Path of Abai', and one of the founders of modern Kazakh literature.
Mukhtar Omarkhanovich Auezov (1897–1961) was a monumental figure in Kazakh literature, an eminent writer, playwright, scholar, and Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. He is widely considered the founding father of modern Kazakh prose and drama.
Early Life and Education
Auezov was born in the Semey region and grew up deeply connected to nomadic oral traditions and the intellectual legacy of Abai Qunanbaiuly. He studied at the Semey Teacher's Seminary, graduated from Leningrad State University, and completed postgraduate studies at Central Asian State University in Tashkent. During his youth, he was closely aligned with the Alash national enlightenment movement.
Literary Legacy and 'The Path of Abai'
Auezov made groundbreaking contributions to theater and fiction. His classic plays, including 'Enlik-Kebek' and 'Karagoz', established the foundations of national Kazakh drama. Short novels like 'Kökserėk' (The Fierce Gray) showcased his psychological insight and storytelling prowess.
His crowning achievement is the magnificent four-volume epic novel 'The Path of Abai'. Through the biography of the great poet Abai, the novel paints a comprehensive, encyclopedic portrait of 19th-century Kazakh nomadic society, traditions, social conflicts, and spiritual transformation. The epic has been translated into over 30 languages and received high praise from global literary figures, including French writer Louis Aragon.
Scientific Contributions and Memory
As an academician, Auezov pioneered the academic field of 'Abaiology' and played a crucial role in documenting and preserving the Kyrgyz epic 'Manas'. Today, the Kazakh National Drama Theatre, the Institute of Literature and Art in Almaty, and numerous avenues and institutions across Kazakhstan bear his name.
