Shoqan Walikhanov

Shoqan Walikhanov was a prominent Kazakh scholar, ethnographer, historian, enlightenment figure, and explorer of Central Asia.
Shoqan Shynggysuly Walikhanov (1835–1865) was one of the founders of modern Kazakh science and culture. He left an indelible mark on the study of the history, ethnography, and geography of the peoples of Central Asia.
Early Life and Education
Shoqan was born in the Kusmuryn fortress (Kostanay Region). He studied at the Omsk Cadet Corps, where he gained a broad knowledge of Russian and Western literature as well as natural sciences. He formed close friendships with prominent figures such as Fyodor Dostoevsky and Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky.
Expedition to Kashgaria
Walikhanov's principal scientific achievement was his perilous expedition to Kashgaria in 1858–1859. Disguised as a merchant, he penetrated a region that was closed to European researchers and gathered unique data on its geography, economy, ethnography, and history.
Scientific Legacy
Shoqan Walikhanov was among the first to record and scientifically analyze the Kyrgyz epic 'Manas'. He deeply studied Kazakh folklore, genealogies, and customary law, leaving behind a valuable body of academic work.
