Which Language Is Closest to Kazakh?

When thinking about which language is closest to Kazakh, most people immediately think of Kyrgyz. After all, Kazakhs and Kyrgyz share a very similar nomadic culture, traditional clothing, and customs.

However, from a linguistic perspective, this is not entirely accurate.

The language truly closest to Kazakh is Karakalpak.

Who Are the Karakalpaks?

The Karakalpaks mainly live in the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan in northwestern Uzbekistan. "Karakalpak" literally means "black hat people" in Turkic languages (Kara - black, Kalpak - hat).

Historically, Karakalpaks and Kazakhs share common roots from the Desht-i Kipchak steppe following the disintegration of the Golden Horde, retaining deep ties in tribal structures, historical memory, and customs.

Why Is Karakalpak the Closest Language?

In linguistic classification, Kazakh and Karakalpak both belong to the Kipchak-Nogai branch of the Kipchak Turkic group.

Their vocabulary overlap and grammatical structure similarity exceed 90%. In daily conversation, Kazakhs and Karakalpaks can understand each other without any translator. Many linguists view Karakalpak and Kazakh almost as closely related dialectal variants of the same linguistic root.

Besides Karakalpak, the Nogai language spoken in the Caucasus region of Russia belongs to the same branch. Meanwhile, Kyrgyz belongs to a different sub-branch (Kyrgyz-Kipchak), making it slightly further relative to Kazakh than Karakalpak.
