Baige (Kazakh Horse Racing)

Baige is one of the oldest and most popular Kazakh equestrian sports. It is an open-country horse race that tests endurance, jockey stamina, and horse training mastery over long distances.

History & Cultural Value

Baige is deeply rooted in nomadic culture. Historically featured at every major festival, gathering, and celebration, it was the ultimate arena for displaying horsemanship and breeding excellence. Winners received great honor and valuable prizes within the community.

Main Types of Races

  • Alaman Baige: A legendary long-distance race over rugged terrain (ranging from 20 to 50 km) that tests extreme equine endurance.
  • Kunan Baige: A medium-distance race (11 to 15 km) held specifically for two-year-old horses to identify future racing champions.
  • Zhorga Zharys: A paced trotting competition where horses must maintain a specific, smooth gait (pacing) without breaking into a full gallop.

Today, Baige is organized across national circuits, preserving the nomadic spirit in a modern athletic format.
