Qazaq Kuresi (Kazakh Wrestling)

Qazaq Kuresi is one of the oldest and most celebrated national sports of Kazakhstan. It is an upright martial art that tests balance, upper-body strength, and tactical skill.

History & Cultural Value

Qazaq Kuresi is more than a sport; it is an ancestral martial tradition that forged the spirit of Kazakh warriors (Paluans). Historically featured at every major feast and gathering, it was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.

Key Rules & Mechanics

  • Upright Combat Only: Ground fighting (parterre) is prohibited. Once a wrestler touches the mat with three points, action pauses.
  • Traditional Attire: Wrestlers wear reinforced jackets with fabric belts, providing key grips for takedowns.
  • Legal Techniques: Throws, sweeps, and trips utilizing upper-body leverage and belt holds are core strategies.
  • Victory Condition: Throwing an opponent cleanly onto both shoulder blades results in an immediate full victory.

Today, national premier tournaments like 'Kazakhstan Barysy' have elevated Qazaq Kuresi into a professional, modern combat sport enjoyed worldwide.
