Kyz Kuu (Chasing the Maiden)
Kyz Kuu (literally 'chase the girl') is one of the most vibrant and celebrated Kazakh equestrian games. It combines horsemanship, speed, and romance as a young man and woman race on horseback across two distinct legs.
History & Cultural Charm
Kyz Kuu dates back centuries to nomadic steppe traditions. Historically, it served both as a demonstration of superior horsemanship and a playful, romantic tradition for young men and women. Today, Kyz Kuu remains a major attraction at Nauryz celebrations, cultural festivals, and national equestrian tournaments worldwide.
Game Rules & Mechanics
- Leg 1 (The Chase): The young woman gets a head start on horseback, sprinting towards a defined finish line. The young man pursues her at full speed. If he catches up before the line, he earns a kiss on her cheek.
- Leg 2 (The Return): Upon reaching the turn-around point, the positions reverse. The young woman now pursues the young man back to the starting point. If she catches him, she is entitled to playfully strike him with her riding whip (kamcha).
- Attire & Presentation: Riders wear brightly decorated traditional Kazakh attire—embellished velvet coats, embroidered hats, and ornate saddlery on their horses.
